In this paper we look at the Proto-Salish sound system as it has emerged from recent research, and demonstrate that, in view of the rarity of certain phonemes or series of phonemes, as well as correlations between certain sets of phonemes, the Proto-Salish sound system may have evolved from a simpler one, as found in earlier (Pre-Proto-Salish) stage. Sound symbolism would have been the main driving factor behind the creation of phonemes that were added to Pre-Proto-Salish as it morphed into Proto-Salish. We also show that Proto-Salish root doublets likely go back to single roots, with variants created through dissimilation.
