A Guide to B.C. Indian Myth and Legend: A Short History of Myth-Collecting and a Survey of Published Texts
Library Item
When Ralph Maud began work on A Guide to BC Indian Myth and Legend, it was to have been a bibliography of ethnographic studies in British Columbia. It is that, but in addition it is a fascinating behind the scenes look at the people who have informed the world about native culture in BC. Who were/are the ethnographers and the native informants? How have their motives and attitudes affected the information we have been given? Boas, Teit, Hill-Tout, Barbeau, Swanton, Jenness, the luminaries of field research in BC, are discussed in A Guide to BC Indian Myth and Legend, and their work in Indian folklore evaluated. Other scholars, amateurs and native informants of the past and present are given ample consideration, making A Guide to BC Indian Myth and Legend a comprehensive survey of myth collecting in BC. The aim of the book is to reveal the true extent of this neglected body of world literature, and to begin to sort out the more valuable texts from those damaged in transmission. A Guide to BC Indian Myth and Legend is a valuable reference tool for beginning or advanced students of anthropology, and an absorbing look at the research process itself.
