Shared Treasures: Gifts from Our Ancestors: Northwest Coast Native Art at the Seattle Art Museum

This curriculum resource unit is designed for use by the classroom teacher who wants to teach about the art and culture of the people of the Northwest Coast, from the Puget Sound Salish peoples of the Seattle area, the Makah and Nuu chah nulth of coastal Washington and Vancouver Island, and the Kwakiutl and Bella Bella of British Columbia to the Tlingit and Haida of coastal British Columbia and Southeast Alaska.
The unit examines some of the Northwest Coast Native art objects in the Seattle Art Museum's permanent collection. It was developed as a collaborative project by members of the Northwest Coast Native community, educators, artists, curriculum development specialists, and Seattle Art Museum education staff.
The unit is divided into two sections: Art for Everyday Use and Art for Ceremonial Use. Each section begins with an introduction to help orient the teacher to the themes of the unit.
