"Glancing Back": Reflections and Anecdotes on Vancouver Public Schools
Library Item
Who would have thought that the evolution of Vancouver public schools would hinge on a little four year old girl named Adelaide Patterson?
Since February 12, 1872, the opening day of the first public school in Vancouver, the district has evolved from a one room serving 15 students (including Adelaide) on a budget of approximately $1,000 to one serving 50,000 students in 100 schools with a budget of over $200 million.
During that time, students, parents, school trustees and staff have struggled with economic depression, wars, the onslaught of technology and community debates on the role of public education and the best way to provide a quality education to all students on an equal basis.
Who knows what the next 100 years will bring? Grade 5 students provide their predictions. This history, comprised of hundreds of photographs and candid anecdotes collected from former students, teachers and trustees, tells the story of our public schools, complete with blemishes and triumphs.
