Plurality in Sk̲wx̲wú7mesh (Squamish Salish): A Look at Reduplication
Academic Work
The goal of this paper is to examine the various readings that are associated with the process of reduplication in Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), a Central Coast Salish language. I propose that reduplicants in Squamish mark PLURAL in both the verbal and nominal domain. In the nominal domain, reduplication denotes plural individuals and in the verbal domain, reduplication denotes plural individuals and in the verbal domain, reduplication denotes plural events. In Squamish, plural events are denoted by habitual, iterative and continuous event readings. The semantics of pluractional markers (Lasersohn 1995) provide a straightforward way of distinguishing between the various readings encoded by plural events in Squamish.
