Charlie Douglas

Individual

Charlie Douglas was born at Kyáwtin (Garibaldi Highlands) c1875. He had two daughters and a son (Harriet, Emma and Gus). He is remembered by his family as a man of very large stature who worked hard all his life. Sxwelíḵten was a great canoe maker and also worked as a logger, trapper, and hop picker.

The Sḵwx̱ú7mesh (Squamish) Nation Elders remember Sxwelíḵten’s oral history. One of the most well known Sḵwx̱wú7mesh legends is about his grandmother who was captured by the Sx̱éyx̱nm (Chilcotin people) and it was many years before she was returned home. Through oral history, this story has been passed down for many generations. Today the legend of Sxwelíḵten’s grandmother is told to young Sḵwx̱wú7mesh children at home and at school.
