Dominic Charlie

Dominic Charlie was born c1885 at Yelhíxw (Head waters of Squamish River). He was married to Josephine for many years. He is remembered by his family as being a man of great vision, wisdom, and compassion for his Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) Nation and family. 

Syex̱wálten was a Weatherman and his predictions for the seasons were fully covered by local newspapers. IN addition, he was a noted oral historian and co-authored many published texts on Squamish Legends and History (Squamish Legends of Chief August Jack Khahtsahlano and Dominic Charlie: The First People by Oliver Wells, 1966). He was a talented entertainer and performed at many historic events, pow wows and festivals-sharing Sḵwx̱wú7mesh songs and dances and keeping them alive. 

In his lifetime Syex̱wálten was an esyéw (prophet), a longhouse dancer and owner of the Sx̱wa’yx̱wi masks. Today his descendants continue with the sacred tradition of the Sx̱wa’yx̱wi.
