August Jack Khahtsahlano was born at Sen’áḵw (False Creek) c1868. His descendants remember him as a kind, generous and dignified man who was a respected leader of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) Nation. He had a presence about him that showed he was a man of food up-bringing and character.
X̱ats’alánexw was a famous storyteller, oral historian, and was recognized as an authority on Sḵwx̱wú7mesh culture and traditions. His words are remembered by the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Nation and are published in Squamish Legends by Chief August Jack Khahtsahlano and Dominic Charlie: The First People by Oliver Wells, 1966 and Conversations with Khahtsahlano 1932-1954 by Major Matthews, 1955. During his lifetime X̱ats’alánexw was the Nation’s traditional "Keeper of the Graves" and oversaw the burials of our ancestors. In addition, he carved totem poles and model canoes for the Museum of Vancouver and tourist trade.
X̱ats’alánexw was a kwetsí7s (medicine man), longhouse dancer and owner of Sx̱wáyx̱wi masks. As an owner of masks, his traditional rights were passed down to his descendants and today they continue with Sḵwx̱wú7mesh tradition of the Sx̱wáyx̱wi.
