Chief Mathias Joe was born at Yekw’ts (I.R. #12). Tlei-su-lah was the son of Chief Joe Capilano and Líx̱welut (Mary Agnes Capilano). He was was married to Aka tl ̓ isala (Ellen Hall). Tlei-su-lah was a charismatic man of many talents. He is remembered as a fisherman, hunter, longshoreman, logger, historian, artist, singer and a longhouse spirit dancer. Tlei-su-lah was a famous orator and entertainer who loved to make people laugh. He also had a serious side and fought for Aboriginal Rights.

He is remembered by his family as a man who loved his wife, children, grandchildren and community. He loved life and all people, no matter what age, colour or nationality. One highlight that all of Canada will remember is Tlei-su-lah’s invitation and attendance at the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in England. Today his family proudly follows in his footsteps as hereditary chiefs, artists, spirit dances, historians, and advocates of Aboriginal Rights.
